Anatomy of a Downstem
Surprisingly, a downstem has multiple components. In this article, we will show you every piece that makes up your downstem. We will also attempt to dispel a few misconceptions and offer a few tips on selecting your next downstem.
Such as:
- the correct way to measure the length of your downstem.
- what the benefits are of different diffusers.
- what bowl size will fit your downstem.
With all this information you will have everything you need to choose the perfect downstem for your water rig.
Bowl Fit
The bowl fit is the part of the downstem where your bowl is inserted into. You can find the bowl fit located at/inside the very top of the downstem. Bowl fits are designed to be fitted with specific glass bowl sizes. Although each downstem is different, the most universal bowl fit sizes are 14.4mm, and 18.8mm. Since the bowl fits determines what size bowls you can use with your downstem, this is a critical measurement to know before ordering.
Length
The length of a downstem will determine how far the downstem will reach into your water rig. This will also impact the water level you can fill your rig to. ideally the downstem should be long enough so that the diffuser rests 1/4” to 1/2” above the bottom of your water rig. The length of a downstem is commonly measured incorrectly. A downstems length is measured from the joint to the bottom of the diffuser. A downstems length is the only component that is measured in inches. All other measurable components use millimeters.
Joint
The joint of a downstem is measured at the top of the ground, just underneath the bowl fit. The joint is the widest part of the ground and is responsible for keeping an air tight seal while you rip your water rig. Without the proper joint size your downstem will not rest flush in your rig and you will not have a reliable airflow. The most common joint sizes are 14.4mm and 18.8mm.
